Bay of Islands Rotary is a friendly group of men and women active in the local community.

We are volunteers who come from all walks of life and ages, sharing a passion for making a positive difference to those needing a helping hand. We do this through a variety of projects of our own and sponsoring people, particularly youth, to leadership programs that will help them grow as individuals.

Our members are as active as their lifestyle and other commitments allow and enjoy being involved, as this is a great way to meet new people and make more friends while also doing some great things for the community, so Rotary adds value to their lifestyle.

As Rotarians, we have access beyond the club to the extensive world of Rotary internationally, whether to meet others, take part in volunteer service, or pursue recreational or professional interests. For more on Rotary as a global service organisation visit www.rotary.org.

What we do, and do well!

Bay of Islands Rotary offers volunteers community service opportunities through participation in various project teams and by contribution to local, national, pacific and international projects and events.

The projects we do in the community come from ideas received from members of the community and from club members, and we welcome the involvement at all stages of project creation and delivery of anyone willing to contribute as they can, including those wishing to help with project funding through sponsorship

(note that project funds are via our Charitable Trust enabling donation receipts).

Below you’ll find examples of some of the projects and events we do.

Supporting Great Causes

This is our popular annual breakfast raising funds for Daffodil Day (Cancer Society), but we support several other charities as volunteers as well.  Internationally, we are active supporters of the global Polio Eradication initiative started by Rotary International.

Other local activities include helping the set up and breakdown for the Paihia to Russell Ocean Swim, and sausage sizzles of course, plus marshalling at various sports events like The Beast…there are too many to list all here.

Youth and Young Adults

We support many projects that foster the potential of our youth and young adults.  Shown is the presentation to a student of a Pictorial Dictionary, a project we do with over 12 schools in the area.  Others include sponsorship to leadership development opportunities, whether sailing on the R Tucker Thompson, or the well regarded Rotary programmes, such as Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) and Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN for secondary school students).

Improving our Environment

Near Russell, we support the development of walking and cycling tracks, but there are a wide range of environmental activities we also take a part in or support in a variety of ways. This can range from a simple beach cleanup, to tidying up a Waitangi roundabout, to helping create new tracks or building footbridges, to supporting school environmental programmes.

Support to Communities

Creative solutions is something we are good at, and here we have locally sourced used clothing going via yachts heading to Tonga for poor villagers there.

There are many other examples, such as sponsoring disaster relief in the Pacific, or members helping recovery clean-up activity in Hawke’s Bay after the flooding.
